The Ramblers - Derbyshire Dales Group

New Social Secretary

From our new Social Secretary

I hope everyone will take note of the new programme of social events and that as many of you as possible will be able to come to some of them. I think we have a very good set of speakers.

One of our ramblers, Iris Wright suggested Mark Vallance, who has a very impressive CV. He was President of the British Mountaineering Council for three years; the Base Commander of a British Antarctic Survey team; and opened the Outside shop in Hathersage. As if this is not enough he also had the idea to publish the mountain maps produced by Harvey and founded the Wild Country Company which is the main manufacturer of the rock-climbing safety aid known as the “friend” in collaboration with its inventor the climber Ray Jardine. Unfortunately he is now suffering from Parkinson’s disease and his fee will go to a charity that funds research into this debilitating condition.

I would appreciate any recommendations from ramblers for suitable speakers for our social evenings. This may be a good time to remind everyone that these evenings have to be self financing so we do need your regular support. It’s a case of use it or lose it.
