The Monsal Trail Tunnels
After much publicity, the tunnels of the Monsal Trail, closed since 1968 after the Midland Railway was axed by Dr. Beeching, were opened on 25th May by Norman Baker, the Minister of Transport. As a consequence, the 8.5 miles running from Bakewell to Wyedale present a continuous trail for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. This event has been eagerly anticipated by local people because of the greater accessibility, not only for families with babies in push chairs and those in wheelchairs but also entrepreneurs such as cycle hire operators.
Of course it has been possible in the past to walk through the tunnels on occasions, in the company of a PDNP Ranger.
There is a certain “Wow” factor present emerging from a tunnel to observe how the scenery has changed. This is particularly evident on the short stretch between Litton and Cressbrook Tunnels with Beautiful views of Water-cum-Jolly Dale and Cressbrook Hall. Back in the fifties, this view would have been tantalisingly brief for those peering out from the window of a speeding train. Now it can be enjoyed at leisure by everyone.
