Chairman’s page
At the recent AGM attended by 36 members (out of a total of 620), the Social Secretary + Minutes Secretary posts were filled. We are still looking for a new Treasurer. This was followed by an interesting talk on “Snow Shoeing”€¯ given by one of our members, Michael Hunt, who runs Mountain House Holidays. We were enticed by this novel way of rambling through deep snow and will probably be keen to try it if the bad winter predicted by our weather forecasters comes true. An incident on a recent Thursday walk brought home the fact that we don’t always know much about our fellow ramblers if and when we need to know about their medical condition and/or how to contact their next-of-kin. In the next edition of ”Footprints”€¯ we aim to include details of information to be recorded on ”Personal Information Tags” which we hope each member will complete and will carry whilst out walking. Our editor’s article on the Monsal Trail Tunnels talked about a certain “Wow”€¯ factor and its popularity has produced many problems. I have been “volunteered”€¯ to be part of the PDNPA Steering Committee whose purpose is to produce a 5 year plan for the future management of the Monsal Trail. On November 5th one of our regular Saturday walkers, Margaret, led us on what I called her ”Widdershins Walk”. Exactly a year before she had led this reasonable easy walk in a clockwise direction along Froggatt Edge and back up the River Derwent. This time we walked it in an anticlockwise direction and had to agree, as we all struggled up the steep hill to Froggatt Edge that a walk is NOT the same either way round! Nick Stephens.
